5 Alarm Garden Apartment Fire

Units were dispatched at 1548 hours to the 12100 block of Shorefield Court for the reported fire in the bathroom on Box Area 18-01. Company 18 arrived on the scene with smoke showing. A working fire was discovered in apartment 32. As crews began knocking down the fire opening up the apartment it became clear the fire had already reached the pipe chases and had traveling through the concealed spaces to the attic. The fire extended quickly and heavy fire conditions were found in the attic and through the roof.

The fire traveled quickly and in no time had extended to two attached exposures. Engine 151 and Truck 15 operated for several hours and at various locations during the incident. A fifth alarm was ultimately requested. In all more than 100 people were left homeless and 42 apartments were were damged or destroyed. Damage is estimated at over $3.5 million.
