![]() Burtonsville Volunteers Deployed to New Orleans
September 5, 2005 Volunteer Firefighters from Company 15 were called upon yesterday to volunteer for deployment as part of a firefighting force to support the firefighters in the city of New Orleans. Much like the rest of the city, the New Orleans Fire Department has been devastated. With just two hours notice, four members, Master Firefighter Harry Saval, Firefighter John Klavon, Firefighter Andrew Tarbell, and Firefighter Roy Hunt volunteered for deployment. Several other members have already expressed interest in future deployments. There were a significant number of career and volunteer personnel that volunteered County wide (over 400) and MFF Saval and F/F Klavon were included in the final selection to be part of the deployment. They left the station at 0430 hours this morning and are currently on the road enroute to New Orleans with the MCFRS convoy. The MCFRS sent four engines, two ladder trucks, numerous command officers, support vehicle and support personnel. The members are expected to be in New Orleans for two weeks and provide fire protection and relief to the city’s firefighters. The BVFD also volunteered the use of Truck 15 for the deployment. Truck 15 was sent to be serviced in preparation for the trip and unfortunately, due to a brake problem, it was not able to be utilized. There may be a second deployment in two weeks to relieve the first group and several BVFD members have expressed their desire to serve in that deployment. We will provide updates on the group’s activities as we receive them.
